Lady Winifred Burghclere's four daughters were as follows:


Hon. Juliet Mary Evelyn Stanhope  Gardner  (1892- 1974 ).  In 1916 she  married Captain Alexander  Duncan Cumming Russell  ( 1889-1951), they  divorced in  1922.   Juliet, a repressed  lesbian, devoted her life to working for the RSPCA, and lived in Tunbridge Wells. 

 

Alathea  Margaret Gwendolin Valentine Gardner ( 1893-1968)  married  Geoffrey Storrs Fry ( 1888-1960) in 1915.  Fry  was knighted – he was  Private Secretary to  Prime Ministers  Bonar Law and  Baldwin. Geoffrey was a homosexual. Alathea’s mental health was a constant issue, she died at sea.

 

Hon. Mary Gardner ( 1896-1982)  married Hon. Geoffrey Hope Morley, ( 1885-1977)  eldest son of Lord and Lady Hollenden.   Divorced 1928. She then married Alan Hugh Hillgarth ( 1899-1978), a  diplomat, spy and adventurer,  they  divorced  in 1946.

 

Hon. Evelyn Florence Margaret Winifred Gardner ( 1903-1994). Married  the writer Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), they divorced in 1930. Waugh’s famous ‘ She Evelyn’  married three times in all.

Lady Winifred, her mother  ( who died in 1933 ) was spared the humiliation of Evelyn’s second divorce from John Heygate, in 1935.

Evelyn later settled down to 'normal life' when she married  her third husband,Ronald Nightingale.
